Course Overview

Study online at your own pace through interactive learning modules developed by experts in contraception clinical practice and education. This 9.5 hour course is designed for doctors, nurses and midwives wanting to develop or refresh their understanding of today’s contraception options. Training may be considered for other health care professionals, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners.  You will gain in-depth knowledge of the latest contraception options available in Australia and learn how to safely apply this knowledge in the clinical setting.

Course Content

  • Contraception options and clinical consultation
  • Contraception initiation
  • Quick Start
  • Long acting reversible contraception (LARC) – intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implant
  • The combined pill (including different formulations and packaging), contraceptive injection, vaginal ring and progestogen only pills.
  • Non-hormonal forms of contraception
  • Emergency contraception
  • Contraception use in special circumstances - including young people, the perimenopause and people with chronic medical conditions and interacting medications
  • Guidance on management of patients with contraindications and side effects
  • Option of a contraception mini-audit, with an easy to use template to record 5-10 contraception consultations, compare with best practice guidelines, and to identify areas for improvement.  

Please note that some of this course content is also included the online component of the Comprehensive Reproductive and Sexual Health (Nursing) course. It is also included in the online & virtual classroom version of the FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive and Sexual Health for Doctors.

Eligibility

This course is open to doctors, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, enrolled nurses and midwives.  Training may be considered for other health care professionals, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Practitioners.
