Intrauterine Device Insertion Train the Trainer course is a mixed methods course with a 6-hour self-paced online eLearning module followed by a 1-hour virtual workshop as well as a review and feedback on your first training session.

Course Overview

The IUD train the trainer course is a mixed-method program with online learning, a virtual workshop and review and feedback on your first training session. The training delivers the theoretical and clinical knowledge necessary to become a Sexual Health Victoria accredited trainer.

Course Content

The online theory component (approx. 5 hours) includes:

  • Video presentations
  • Videos of IUD consultations and insertions
  • Interactive quizzes

 

Once the online theory component has been completed then participants are required to attend a 1-hour virtual workshop that will discuss the following topics:

  • Structuring training sessions
  • How to manage the transition to competent trainee and how to identify and support the borderline candidate
  • Discussion of equipment that can be used for teaching
  • Discussion of documentation and certification of competency for trainees

After completion of the workshop, trainers will go on to train another health practitioner in IUD insertion to receive full certification.

Relevant guidelines and a comprehensive training log will be provided to document the trainee's IUD insertion experience as well as provide proof of training.

Clinical training can be undertaken either in the trainer’s or trainee’s practice. Sexual Health Victoria does not facilitate clinical training for this course.

Entry Requirements/Eligibility

  • AHPRA registration as a doctor or nurse practitioner
  • Current indemnity insurance

To be eligible for this course and to become an IUD insertion trainer you will also need to check if you meet all of the recommended criteria, and some or most of the desirable criteria listed below. You will be asked to confirm this during registration.

Required Criteria

  • a minimum of 2 years experience in IUD insertion in Australia
  • a minimum of 30 previous IUD insertions
  • maintenance of current IUD practice with at least 10 insertions per year

Desirable criteria

  • Experience in both hormonal and copper IUD insertion.
  • Extensive experience in contraceptive counselling
  • Well-developed bimanual pelvic examination skills.
  • FPAA Certificate in Reproductive & Sexual Health or a RANZCOG certificate or diploma, or able to demonstrate considerable experience in sexual health and gynaecology.

Enrolment in training is at the discretion of the IUD Insertion course lead and/or Clinical Education Unit Manager.

Outcomes

  • Recognise current clinical guidance for IUD insertion
  • Recall the core skills required for a  trainee to achieve competency in IUD insertion
  • Design and deliver an IUD insertion clinical training session
  • Recall and integrate strategies to support borderline or remedial IUD insertion trainees to achieve competence
  • Participants will receive a certificate of accreditation as an SHV IUD Insertion Trainer on completion of all components of the course.
